A Banyan Tree (I wish I was)
A Poem by Roqué Marcelo

Tangled roots curling down
From the temple
Of God.

They seep into the soil
To cling to the earth.

I, in my birth, came forth
Unspoiled
Until I learned to be
What I was not.

I wish I could be those curly locks
To climb myself out of this unforgiving place

But oh, would the world

Cling to me

So
That
I
Could
Not

Let

  Go

     Even so . . .

          I
            wish
                 I
                    was

                              A

                                        Banyan

                                                           Tree

A Note about this Issue:

All photos and film footage were captured in Sarasota, FL. Banyan trees only grow in warm and wet tropical climates. An enormous one grew right in front of my childhood home in a village in American Samoa, and it was my private castle as a boy. I love Banyan trees immensely.
